For many years, lower Elizabeth Street and neighbouring Dundas Street was the centre of Toronto's small Chinatown - Chinese comprised less than 1 percent of the city's 630,000 residents in 1931.

Much of this district was demolished in the early 1960s to make way for the new City Hall.
