A voyage of discovery to the North Pacific Ocean, and round the world

Friendly Cove, Nootka Sound

Captain James Cook was the first European to visit Nootka Sound on the Pacific coast of Vancouver Island in 1778. Nootka Sound became the centre of a dispute between Spain and Great Britain over trading and navigation rights in the Pacific Northwest. George Vancouver's mission was to negotiate a settlement with the Spanish Commissioner at Nootka, and to continue his explorations along the Pacific coast.
