Gioseffo Zarlino was an Italian composer and a leading theorist of counterpoint in the sixteenth-century. Le istitutioni harmoniche is a landmark in the history of music theory integrating speculative theory and the practice of composition in an original way. Zarlino's work brings together concepts from many disciplines besides music, including philosophy, theology, mathematics, and classical history and literature.
