Canadian Historical Pictures

John Ross Robertson, founder and publisher of the Toronto Telegram, donated his large collection of Canadian historical pictures to the Toronto Public Library, between 1910 and 1918. Robertson's gift forms the nucleus of the present collection, which now contains approximately 15,000 paintings, drawings and prints, 50,000 photographs and over 3,000 postcards. The primary aim of the collection is to preserve pictures of historical rather than artistic significance; however, the works of many well known artists such as Robert Ford Gagen, Elizabeth Simcoe, Arthur Cox and Walter Coucill are represented.
