Toronto Rolling Mills

Toronto Harbour 1793

The Toronto Rolling Mills, which manufactured iron rails, was founded in 1857 by a group of businessmen led by railway magnate Sir Casimir Gzowski. It was the largest iron mill in Canada, and the largest manufacturing industry in Toronto, but went out of business in 1873 when steel rails were introduced. This unusual view of the inside of a nineteenth century factory is one of William Armstrong's most famous works.
